Mount Buffalo National Park is a fantastic holiday destination either in the summer to enjoy the mountain air and the fabulous scenery or during the winter months to enjoy the fabulous skiing and winter sports that are so popular there. Mount Buffalo is one of Victoria’s oldest national parks and one of Australia’s most photographed beauty spots. The local mountains are covered is Snowgums and as you move lower to the valley regions there are fantastic forests of Bluegum and Mountain Ash. The wild life is unique with Wallabys, Wombats Possums, Kangaroo and Echidna to be seen and the canopy is alive with birds of all description. The towns of Myrtleford, Bright and Mount Beauty are all close and all of these options provide a wide range of accommodation for visitors to the park. The surrounding countryside is also quite beautiful and it is not far from Victoria’s other ski resorts of Falls Creek and Mount Hotham.
Most international visitors will fly into Melbourne and then either join an organized tour or hire a vehicle and explore the region at their own pace. Domestic flights into Albury are also available and then drive into the region from there. Mount Buffalo is popular with hang gliders and rock climbers with spectacular 300 meter high cliffs providing some challenging opportunities. There is also around 100 kilometers of walking trails and good camping facilities in the park and this is one of the best ways to get around and see every thing that the Mount Buffalo National Park has to offer.
During the winter months, Mount Buffalo is a popular skiing resort and during this period many skiers come here to try out its slopes. It is a great place for families to come for a days skiing in a smaller ski destination. Cresta Valley has 3 poma lifts and two chairlifts. Most of these service intermediate and beginner slopes. Dingo Dell has two poma lifts and is an ideal place for learners to practice their skills. There are also 11 kilometers of marked trails for cross country skiers. Mount Buffalo is a fantastic destination for a family holiday where you can combine many great outdoor activities. Skiing, bushwalking, snow play, animal and bird watching, rock climbing and hang gliding amid some of Australia’s most spectacular alpine scenery. |
